This traditional Italian variety is grown mainly on the slopes of the Apennines, where the cooler mountain air meets the mild influence of the Adriatic Sea. It is this contrast between the mountains and the sea that allows the grapes to ripen slowly and preserve their natural acidity, which is typical of the quality Montepulciano d\u2019Abruzzo DOC wines.<\/p>\n
The DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) designation sets precise rules for the origin of the grapes, varieties, production method and minimum parameters of the wine. In the case of this wine, the grapes must come from the Abruzzo region in central Italy. The permitted production areas include the provinces of Chieti, Pescara, Teramo and L\u2019Aquila. Vineyards are most often located on the slopes of the Apennines with an altitude of approximately 500 m above sea level, exceptionally up to 600 m in southern exposures.<\/p>\n
Wine classified as Montepulciano d\u2019Abruzzo DOC must be made from at least 85% of the Montepulciano variety. The remaining maximum 15% can be made up of other permitted blue varieties, but they must also be grown in the Abruzzo region.<\/p>\n
The DOC appellation also sets a maximum permitted yield of approximately 14 tons of grapes per hectare. The aim of limiting the yield is to preserve the concentration and typical character of the wine. The minimum alcohol content for this classification is set at approximately 11.5%.<\/p>\n
The Montepulciano variety is known for its ability to create wines with a dark color, pronounced fruitiness and a firm tannin structure. Thanks to their structure, they have good potential for aging, but are also often accessible in younger vintages. Montepulciano d\u2019Abruzzo is today one of the most famous Italian red wines and is an important representative of the Abruzzo wine region.<\/p>\n
The Ciccio Zaccagnini winery was founded in 1978 in the municipality of Bolognano in the province of Pescara, in the heart of the Abruzzo wine region. It is a family winery that has focused from the beginning on the production of wines from local varieties, mainly Montepulciano d\u2019Abruzzo and Trebbiano d\u2019Abruzzo. The vineyards are located on the slopes of the Majella National Park, where the combination of calcareous soils, mountain winds and the proximity of the Adriatic Sea create suitable conditions for growing grapes.<\/p>\n
What is interesting about this winery is its strong connection with culture and art.
