We tasted the wine during our visit to the winery. Tatiana, the winery\u2019s chief winemaker, guided us through both the tour and the tasting; she also provided the basic technical details included in this article. Her long-standing connection to the winery and the winemaking process makes the tour a truly engaging experience. The Merlot Syrah from the Vinuri de Comrat winery is a dry red wine hailing from the Valul lui Traian wine region in southern Moldova. It blends two French grape varieties that complement each other perfectly: Merlot contributes fruitiness, softer tannins, and a full body, while Syrah adds structure, a spicy character, and aromatic complexity.<\/p>\n
Merlot originates from Bordeaux, France, where its cultivation was documented as early as the 18th century. Genetic research has confirmed that it arose from the natural crossing of the Cabernet Franc and Magdeleine Noire des Charentes varieties. As I have mentioned in previous articles, the name Merlot likely derives from the French word *merle*, meaning „blackbird.“ This connection is attributed either to the dark color of the berries or to the bird’s fondness for eating ripe grapes. Merlot is one of the most widely planted black grape varieties in the world. It is characterized by relatively early ripening, good sugar accumulation, and the ability to produce wines with softer tannins. Its aroma and flavor profile typically feature black cherry, plum, and blackberry notes, along with hints of chocolate or herbs, depending on the level of ripeness. Aging in oak barrels can impart nuances of vanilla, cocoa, and subtle spice. In southern Moldova, the warm climate provides ideal conditions for Merlot to achieve optimal ripeness. When blended with Syrah, it provides a fruity foundation and helps soften Syrah’s more pronounced tannic structure.<\/p>\n
Syrah is a French grape variety that originated in the northern Rh\u00f4ne Valley. Genetic analysis has shown that it arose from a natural crossing of the Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche varieties. Despite legends tracing its origins to the Persian city of Shiraz, its French heritage has now been genetically confirmed. The names Syrah and Shiraz refer to the same variety, with „Shiraz“ being the term primarily used in Australia and other New World countries. Syrah is characterized by its dark color, high phenolic content, and distinctive aromatic profile. Typical notes include blackberry, blackcurrant, violet, black pepper, and sometimes smoked meat. The wine’s character is significantly influenced by the climate; in cooler regions, Syrah may exhibit higher acidity, spiciness, and floral notes. In warmer wine-growing regions, such as southern Moldova, it develops a fuller body, riper fruit aromas, and a softer profile. When blended with Merlot, it complements the fruit character with spicy notes, color intensity, and a firmer structure.<\/p>\n
The Vinuri de Comrat winery is one of Moldova’s historic wine producers. Its vineyards are situated in an area with a warm climate, a long growing season, and abundant sunshine. These conditions allow for the cultivation of red grape varieties that achieve excellent phenolic ripeness and a pronounced fruit character.<\/p>\n
The history of Vinuri de Comrat dates back to 1897, when a state-owned enterprise for the production and storage of alcoholic beverages was established in the town of Comrat. At that time, Comrat was part of the Bessarabia Governorate of the Russian Empire. The facility was one of fourteen state warehouses built in Bessarabia as part of alcohol monopoly reforms. Initially, the enterprise focused primarily on the production and distribution of spirits; the production of grape wine did not expand significantly until after World War II. In 1969, the enterprise was incorporated into an agro-industrial complex, and in 1995, it underwent privatization under the name S.A. Vinuri de Comrat. A notable feature of the winery is its preserved historical complex, which includes buildings dating back to the 19th century. The site encompasses original cellars and a museum dedicated to local viticulture and life in Bessarabia. The winery is also active in wine tourism and received the Grand Prix in 2019 for the development of wine tourism in the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n
The vineyards producing this Merlot Syrah blend are located in the Valul lui Traian wine region in southern Moldova. This area encompasses the autonomous region of Gagauzia, with Comrat as its capital. The name Valul lui Traian\u2014meaning „Trajan’s Wall“\u2014refers to historical earthen fortifications in southern Bessarabia traditionally associated with the Roman Emperor Trajan; their exact origin and dating remain subjects of historical research. The region features a continental climate characterized by hot summers, relatively low rainfall, and abundant sunshine. These conditions are particularly favorable for growing Merlot and Syrah, especially regarding grape ripening and the development of phenolic compounds. Today, Vinuri de Comrat produces dry, semi-sweet, and dessert wines, with a portfolio that includes both international and local grape varieties. Well-known brands include Plai, Terra del Vino, and Legenda Vinului.<\/p>\n
The Merlot Syrah 2020 cuv\u00e9e is also marketed under the Plai Moldova label. It consists of 85% Merlot and 15% Syrah and is aged for twelve months in French oak barrels.<\/p>\n

The wine displays a deep ruby-red color with dark cherry hues. The Merlot contributes to the ruby \u200b\u200bcoloration, while the Syrah enhances the color’s intensity and depth.<\/p>\n
The nose is dominated by aromas of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, and black cherry. The fruit base is complemented by subtle notes of vanilla, chocolate, and spice, derived in part from oak barrel aging.<\/p>\n
The wine boasts a full body, a velvety texture, and a pronounced fruit character. On the palate, it reveals dark forest fruits, ripe plums, and cherries, accompanied by vanilla-chocolate nuances and a spicy finish. The Merlot lends softness and fruity richness, while the Syrah contributes to the wine’s structure. The finish is long, with lingering notes of ripe fruit and subtle oak.<\/p>\n
The alcohol content is 13% ABV.<\/p>\n
The recommended serving temperature is 16\u201318\u00b0C. At this temperature, the wine\u2019s fruit character, along with its spicy and oak notes, is fully expressed. A brief decanting period also helps to open up the aromatic profile.<\/p>\n
Merlot Syrah pairs particularly well with dishes featuring bold flavors. Suitable pairings include beef steak, roast lamb, game, or slow-braised beef with root vegetables. From Moldovan cuisine, it goes well with herb-roasted lamb or *sarmale* – cabbage, or vine leaves stuffed with minced meat and rice. The wine also complements aged hard cheeses and grilled vegetables.<\/p>\n
