Prosecco Superiore, Brut Millesimato 2024, DOCG, Borgo Molino, Italy

Prosecco Superiore, Brut Millesimato 2024, DOCG, Borgo Molino, Italy

Sparkling wine is an essential part of family celebrations or anniversaries. All the more so is a good and pleasant sparkling wine that is suitable for the most special celebrations – the birth of a granddaughter is one of the special ones, so we treated ourselves to this Prosecco Superiore. In the euphoria of the birth, the sparkling wine was flawless and very tasty as a toast. I definitely recommend it.

The basis of Prosecco is the Glera variety, historically associated with the region of northeastern Italy, especially the Veneto and Friuli regions. Originally, the variety was called Prosecco, but due to the protection of the appellation, it was officially renamed Glera. This is an old local variety, whose history dates back at least to the Roman period, when wines from this area were appreciated for their freshness and drinkability. In the Prosecco Superiore DOCG appellation, specifically in the hilly areas of Conegliano Valdobbiadene, Glera achieves a higher aromatic concentration and more pronounced acidity than in the flat areas of the DOC.

The Borgo Molino winery was founded in 1922 in the Roncadelle di Ormelle area, in the province of Treviso. The name refers to the historic mill that was located near the winery’s original headquarters. It has been a family business since the beginning, now run by the third generation of the Nardin family. The winery has long specialized in sparkling Prosecco wines, with an emphasis on controlling the origin of the grapes and modern technological processes. Borgo Molino is among the producers who specifically work with the Millesimato category, i.e. wines from a single vintage, which is not always a given in the case of Prosecco.

Prosecco Superiore, Brut Millesimato 2024 is produced using the Charmat or Martinotti method, where secondary fermentation takes place in pressurized stainless steel tanks. Using grapes exclusively from a single vintage allows for a better capture of the character of a specific growing season. Controlled fermentation at low temperatures preserves the aromatics of the Glera variety, especially the fruity and floral profile. Brut style means low residual sugar content, which emphasizes freshness.

Here is its description:

The sparkling wine has a light straw yellow color with greenish reflections, which is a sign of freshness. The effervescence is fine, even and persistent, which is typical of high-quality Prosecco Superiore DOCG.

The aroma is dominated by green apple, pear and white peach, complemented by delicate notes of citrus peel and white flowers. There are also hints of almonds and fresh pastries, which are the result of contact with the yeast during secondary fermentation.

The taste is dry, clean and precise. Fresh acidity supports the fruity character of the wine, especially notes of apple and lemon, the effervescence is fine. The finish is medium-long, dry and refreshing, without disturbing sweetness.

Alcohol content 11.5% vol., which is a typical value for high-quality Prosecco Superiore Brut.

The ideal serving temperature is 6–8 °C to preserve the freshness, aromatics and fine structure of the effervescence.

This sparkling wine is suitable as an aperitif, but also goes well with light appetizers such as seafood, fish carpaccio, sushi, or fresh cheeses. Thanks to its dry style, it can also be used with vegetable dishes and simple pasta without cream sauces.

Wines from the Prosecco Superiore category from the Borgo Molino winery regularly appear in professional guides and at international sparkling wine competitions.

Prosecco Superiore, Brut Millesimato 2024 from Borgo Molino is a technically clean, varietal-accurate and balanced sparkling wine. It offers an authentic expression of the Glera variety without striving for sweetness.

I would like to add an explanation of the marks that are marked on the back label.

The mark with a bee in a yellow circle and the inscription SQNPI Qualità Sostenibile has a specific meaning and is not a marketing symbol of the wine industry. It is an official Italian certification.

SQNPI stands for Sistema di Qualità Nazionale Produzione Integrata and means the National Quality System of Integrated Production in Italy. It is a state-guaranteed certification system that was created under the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and is valid for agricultural products, including grapes and wine.

In this system, the bee is understood as an indicator of a healthy ecosystem. If the environment is able to maintain the pollinator population, this means lower chemical load, balanced management and respect for biodiversity in the vineyards.

The SQNPI Qualità Sostenibile certification means that:

– grape cultivation takes place in an integrated production regime, but not strictly organic;

– the use of pesticides and herbicides is strictly regulated and limited to the necessary minimum;

– the emphasis is on protecting soil, water and natural predators of pests;

– the entire process is controlled, monitored and audited by independent bodies.

SQNPI does not use an ideological ban on all synthetic interventions, but a practical and scientifically based model of sustainability. The aim is a long-term balance between grape quality, the economic viability of the winemaking and the protection of the landscape.

In the context of the sparkling wine Prosecco Superiore from Borgo Molino, the SQNPI label certifies that the grapes come from vineyards managed in a sustainable way, with an emphasis on the health of the vineyards and a minimal environmental footprint, without affecting the typical varietal and terroir expression of the wine.

VeganOK is an internationally recognized certification system based in Italy, focused on products without animal ingredients and without their use in the entire production process.

VeganOK is an official certification confirming that the wine is suitable for vegans and meets precisely defined ethical and technological criteria.

The designation Azienda N. 1244 means that a particular winery is registered in the VeganOK system under this assigned identification number and is subject to regular inspections.

In the case of wine, the essence of this certification is mainly technological. The wine itself is naturally of plant origin, but the technology of the wine clarification process is often a problem. Traditionally, substances of animal origin are used in clarification, such as egg albumin, gelatin, or isinglass.

VeganOK certification confirms that:

– no animal products or animal by-products were used during production;

– fining, if used, was carried out exclusively with mineral or plant alternatives;

– no form of animal testing was carried out in production or in auxiliary technological processes.

Unlike some unofficial labels, the VeganOK label has a precisely defined standard, control mechanism and legal protection of the brand. This logo is a signal for the consumer who follows a vegan or ethically oriented lifestyle.

In the context of the Borgo Molino winery, the VeganOK Azienda N. 1244 label complements the information about the sustainable production approach and at the same time transparently communicates the technological purity of the wine, without the intervention of animal substances, which is especially important for modern sparkling wines intended for the international market.
