Veltlínske Zelené (Green Veltliner) 2023, Mrva & Stanko winery, Slovakia

I found the Veltlínske Zelené wine in my wine stash. A long time ago, before I started writing a blog about wine, I bought a rosé wine from this producer and I remember that it was also very pleasant.

The Veltlínske Zelené wine 2023 from the Mrva & Stanko winery is one of the representatives of the modern interpretation of the classic Central European variety Veltlínske Zelené. This variety is historically associated mainly with the territory of present-day Austria and Central Europe, but it also has a stable position in the winemaking of the Slovak Republic, where it is among the traditional and long-grown white varieties.

Veltlínske Zelené (Green Veltliner) is an old Central European variety, the genetic origin of which was only confirmed by modern DNA analysis. One of the parents is the ancient Tramín Červený variety, the other parent comes from a historical, now almost extinct grapevine population from the Lower Austrian region. The first written mentions of this variety date back to the 18th century. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it spread to several wine-growing regions of Central Europe, where it adapted well to the continental climate and various types of soil.

This variety is characterized by a good acid structure, a subtle spiciness and a characteristic white pepper note, which often appears in the aromatic profile of the wine. Veltlínske Zelené can produce wines ranging from light and fresh to more complex wines with the potential for short-term aging.

The Mrva & Stanko winery is one of the most important producers of quality Slovak wines of the modern era. It was founded by winemakers Vladimír Mrva and Peter Stanko in 1997. From the beginning, it has been characterized by an emphasis on technological purity of production, grape selection and the presentation of typical varieties of Slovak wine-growing regions.

The winery is located in Trnava and works mainly with grapes from the Malokarpatska viticultural region. Over the years, it has built a reputation as a producer that can combine traditional varieties with modern processing methods. Interestingly, the winery has been among the pioneers of modern technological equipment in Slovakia from the beginning and has significantly contributed to raising the quality standard of Slovak wines on both the domestic and international markets.

Here is the description of the wine:

The wine has a light yellow color with greenish reflections, typical of young white wines. The clarity and brightness of the color indicate technologically clean processing.

The aromatic profile of the wine is fresh. In the aroma, tones of green apple, citrus peel and a delicate herbal line can be identified. A typical feature of this variety, as I mentioned above, is also a light spiciness reminiscent of white pepper, which gradually develops when the wine is aerated in the glass.

The taste of the wine is dry, fresh and harmonious. Fruity tones of green apple and lime dominate, complemented by a delicate mineral line. The acid is well integrated and supports the fresh character of the wine. The already mentioned, delicate spicy aftertaste also appears in the finish.

The alcohol content is 13 vol. %.

The recommended serving temperature is 11–12 °C.

Wine from the Veltlínske Zelené variety is a gastronomically universal wine and goes well with lighter dishes of freshwater fish, poultry, or vegetable dishes. Dishes with a delicate herb dressing, asparagus, light pasta, or traditional Central European dishes with a cream sauce are also suitable combinations. The fresh acidity of the wine also complements lighter appetizers and cold cuisine well.

The Mrva & Stanko winery is a regular participant in domestic and international wine competitions. Their wines have long won awards at events such as AWC Vienna, Decanter World Wine Awards, or the National Wine Salon of the Slovak Republic.

Veltlínske Zelené 2023 from the Mrva & Stanko winery represents a pure, varietally typical and technologically precise style of Slovak Veltliner. The wine offers fresh aromatics, a balanced acid structure, and a subtle spiciness. This is a wine suitable for everyday drinking and gastronomic pairing, which also well represents the modern production of Slovak viticulture.
