This year’s stay at the exhibition in Germany (Stuttgart) also brought other interesting flavors from the world of white and red wines – today Grauburgunder 2024, STILECHT edition. A pleasant and balanced wine for an evening conversation about anything, as well as for a light dinner.
The Grauburgunder 2024 STILECHT wine from the Weingut Andreas Hiss winery comes from the Kaiserstuhl wine region, one of the warmest wine-growing regions in Germany. This region in the southwest of the country is known for its volcanic soils, which, combined with a high number of sunny hours, create very good conditions for growing Burgundy varieties. Among them, the Grauburgunder variety, also known in the world as Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio, has a significant position. Grauburgunder belongs to a large family of Burgundy varieties, genetically related to the Pinot Noir variety. Historically, it is a natural mutation of this blue variety, which probably originated in the Burgundy region in the Middle Ages and from there gradually spread to Germany, northern Italy and Alsace. In German winemaking, Grauburgunder has established a strong position, especially in warmer regions such as Baden, where it achieves good phenolic maturity and creates wines with a fuller body, delicate fruitiness and balanced acidity.
The Weingut Andreas Hiss winery was founded in the 1960s, when it was founded by Karl-Heinz Hiss, originally a trained cooper. He gradually transformed the family farm into a modern winery focused on Burgundy-type varieties. Currently, the business is run by his son Andreas Hiss, who continues the family tradition and at the same time introduces modern technological processes in vinification. The winery manages approximately 30 hectares of vineyards on the terraced slopes of the Kaiserstuhl. The soil character is determined by a mixture of loess sediments and volcanic bedrock, which gives the wines their typical minerality and structure. Production is based on the principles of integrated viticulture, using our own compost and natural grassing between the vine rows, which supports the stability of the soil ecosystem.
The STILECHT wine edition represents a modern style of winemaking that emphasizes the purity of the variety, freshness and direct expression of the terroir. Grauburgunder 2024 is a typical representative of this philosophy – a wine with a clearly readable varietal character, focused on fruitiness, harmony and good drinkability.
Here is the description of the wine:
The color of the wine is light straw yellow with subtle golden reflections, typical of young Grauburgunder wines grown in warmer wine-growing regions.
The aroma is medium-intense and clean. In the foreground are notes of pear, apple and ripe apricot, complemented by subtle hints of pineapple and honey. In the background, a light touch of almonds and white flowers can also be recognized.
On the palate, the wine is juicy and harmonious. The fruit component is reminiscent of ripe stone fruit and subtle tropical tones. The acidity is balanced and supports the freshness of the wine without being sharp. The overall taste is clean, fruity and well-balanced.
Alcohol is 12.5% vol.
The recommended serving temperature is 10-12 °C.
The wine is also suitable for vegans.
The wine is suitable for pairing with lighter dishes with a delicate texture. It goes well with seafood, fish, poultry or veal, but it also creates a very interesting combination with Asian cuisine or vegetable-based dishes.
Grauburgunder 2024 STILECHT from Weingut Andreas Hiss represents a typical modern German Grauburgunder from the Kaiserstuhl region. The wine is based on pure varietal aromatics, fresh acidity and good structure. The result is a harmonious white wine with universal gastronomic use, which well reflects the character of the warm Baden terroir and the style of the family winery oriented towards Burgundy varieties.
